CBCT

Detailed 3D view of the oral cavity.

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) uses a cone-shaped beam and digital processing to reconstruct a 3D image of your teeth, soft tissues, bone and nerve pathways in a single pass.

The 3D information obtained offers enhanced diagnosis and better understanding of potential oral surgeries, implant planning, TMJ analyses, airway studies related to sleep apnoea, impacted teeth, periodontal disease and endodontic anomalies.

A CBCT scan will only be requested when a traditional dental x-ray may not be sufficient or suitable. The scan only takes 15 to 20 seconds to complete.

What to Expect

Examination

On arrival, you may be asked if they are (or may be) pregnant and to remove jewellery, eyeglasses, hearing aids and any other metal objects which may obscure the images. You will then be asked to sit/stand in the CBCT scanner then bite down gently on a sterile mouthpiece to steady your head in preparation of the scan.

The scanner will rotate around your head during the scan, taking multiple images which will be reconstructed to create the single, three dimensional image. It is very important to remain as still as possible when the scan is in progress so that the image captured is clear and precise. You should not feel any discomfort during the scan.

Examination Duration

CBCT examinations take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Patient Preparation

There is generally no preparation required for a CBCT scan. We kindly request you to arrive 15 minutes prior to their appointment time, bringing your referral form, any previous relevant imaging, your Medicare and any healthcare cards.
